Washington: The Biden administration has approved the sale of MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopter equipment and related systems to India, valued at an estimated $1.17 billion. A notification to the US Congress on Monday stated that the sale aims to bolster India’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities, enabling it to deter both current and future threats effectively.

Details of the proposed sale
India has requested 30 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems (MIDS-JTRS) as part of the deal. The package also includes advanced data transfer systems, AN/AAS 44C(V) forward-looking infrared (FLIR) systems, external fuel tanks, operator machine interface assistants, munitions, and various support and test equipment. Additionally, provisions for facilities study, design, construction, and integration support have been included.

Key contractors and implementation
Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems has been designated as the principal contractor for the programme. The sale’s implementation will necessitate temporary travel to India by up to 20 US Government personnel and 25 contractor representatives for technical support and oversight.

Timing of the decision
The announcement comes as President Joe Biden nears the end of his four-year term, with Donald Trump set to be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency emphasised the strategic importance of this sale in enhancing India’s military capabilities.
