New Delhi/Moscow: India and Russia on Tuesday reaffirmed their long-standing commitment to deepen bilateral defence cooperation, sending a clear message of strategic alignment even as geopolitical tensions and Western pressure mount over India's continued oil trade with Moscow.

The renewed push came during a high-level meeting between Indian Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, and Russian Deputy Defence Minister Colonel-General Alexander Fomin, who oversees international military partnerships. According to an official statement from the Russian Ministry of Defence, the talks were held in a “warm and friendly atmosphere, customary for Russian-Indian ties.”

“During the conversation, the sides discussed in detail the pertinent issues of bilateral interaction in the sphere of defence and confirmed their intent toward the further strengthening of relevant cooperation in the spirit of particularly privileged strategic partnership,” the ministry said.

The meeting comes at a critical juncture, as US President Donald Trump has recently warned of “harsh sanctions” against India for continuing to import discounted Russian crude — a move that Washington says undermines its efforts to isolate Moscow economically.

However, both New Delhi and Moscow appear unshaken in their resolve. The reaffirmation of defence ties reflects India’s consistent strategic autonomy and balancing diplomacy, refusing to be drawn into bloc politics even amid intensifying global rivalries.

India and Russia share decades-old defence relations, spanning joint military exercises, arms deals, and co-development of critical technologies like the BrahMos missile. The recent dialogue underscores their commitment to not only sustain but expand that cooperation despite growing external scrutiny.
