The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check team has exposed a phishing scam targeting customers of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB).
Fraudsters have been sending alarming messages, falsely claiming that accounts will be blocked unless PAN card details are updated. These messages contain a suspicious link, leading users directly to scammers.
The PIB Fact Check team has confirmed that India Post has not sent out any such messages, urging the public to remain cautious and not engage with the fraudulent claims.
Authorities have warned citizens to be vigilant, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and refrain from sharing personal details.
How the scam works
Fraudsters are increasingly targeting individuals by pretending to be bank representatives or government officials. They often claim that the victim’s PAN is linked to illegal activities or that their personal information needs to be updated for compliance purposes. Once they gain the victim’s trust, they pressure them into revealing sensitive details like their PAN, bank account numbers, and other personal identification. With this information, the scammers can carry out unauthorised transactions or even open fraudulent accounts in the victim’s name.
Tips to protect yourself
To safeguard your financial security, it’s essential to update your passwords regularly to prevent unauthorized access to your accounts. Avoid contacting fake customer care numbers and only use official channels when reaching out to your bank or service providers. Monitoring your bank accounts regularly for unusual activity is also crucial to spot any unauthorised transactions early.
Be cautious when clicking on links from unfamiliar sources or opening unsolicited attachments, as these could contain malware designed to steal your personal information. It’s also important to avoid conducting financial transactions over public Wi-Fi networks, which are often insecure.
Finally, always verify the authenticity of any communication you receive that claims to be from your bank. By staying alert and following these safety measures, you can protect yourself from falling victim to these scams.
