India Post has discontinued the Registered Post service across the country from 1 October 2025, replacing it entirely with Speed Post. Officials explained that the move was driven by the demand for faster and more secure mail delivery in line with technological advancements.

Registered Post, once a popular option for legal notices, appointment letters, government communications and personal correspondence, will now be absorbed into Speed Post. The transition was originally scheduled for 1 September but was delayed due to pending software updates.

The upgraded Speed Post system introduces new features such as:

Real-time tracking of consignments.

  • OTP-based delivery verification, ensuring that parcels and letters are handed only to the intended recipient.
  • Optional receipt services, available for an additional charge of ₹5.

The Department of Posts has also released a revised fee chart for Speed Post services:

  • Up to 50 grams: ₹19 (local) to ₹47 (over 2,000 km)
  • 51–250 grams: ₹24 (local) to ₹77 (over 2,000 km)
  • 251–500 grams: ₹28 (local) to ₹93 (over 2,000 km)

Senior Superintendent of Posts, BK Pandey, confirmed the changes in an official statement, noting that the decision aims to streamline services and strengthen customer security.

With this shift, Speed Post is positioned as India Post’s primary secure and fast mail delivery option going forward.

The merger reflects a broader trend of digitisation within India’s postal system, aligning it with global standards in courier and postal services.
