In a move that could significantly improve emergency medical care and patient transport across India, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed an agreement with ICATT, a leading air ambulance service provider, to develop specialised medical helicopters.

Under the agreement, HAL and ICATT will work together to adapt HAL’s Dhruv-NG helicopter for use as an air ambulance and for Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS). These helicopters will be designed to safely and quickly transport critically ill or injured patients, especially from remote and hard-to-reach areas.

ICATT already operates air ambulance services for government, hospitals and private clients, using both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. With this partnership, patients can expect better-equipped helicopters with improved medical facilities on board, including stretcher systems, life-support equipment, oxygen supply and power support for medical devices.

The two organisations will jointly develop the cabin layout, medical equipment setup and safety systems, and will carry out testing and certification to ensure the helicopters meet strict aviation and medical standards set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

ICATT will also explore purchasing or leasing these helicopters to expand its medical services. This means more air ambulances could be available across the country, reducing response times during emergencies and improving access to life-saving care.

Another important part of the agreement is training. Pilots, maintenance engineers and medical support staff will receive specialised training for air ambulance operations, ensuring safe and reliable service for patients.

This partnership is expected to strengthen India’s emergency medical response system, particularly in rural, hilly and disaster-prone regions where road access is limited. By combining HAL’s aircraft expertise with ICATT’s experience in medical aviation, the initiative aims to make critical care transport faster, safer and more accessible for patients across the country.
