New Delhi: India reinforced its growing role in global maritime security and border management by participating in the World Border Security Congress 2026, held in Vienna, Austria, from April 14 to 16.

A three-member Indian delegation represented the country at the high-level international forum, led by Additional Director General Anand Prakash Badola.

Indian Coast Guard showcases maritime security role

Speaking at the session on “Maritime Safety and Security,” ADG Badola delivered a detailed presentation on the expanding role of the Indian Coast Guard in safeguarding India’s maritime borders.

He highlighted the force’s proactive measures in:

  • Maritime surveillance and safety operations
  • Countering illegal activities at sea, including smuggling and trafficking
  • Strengthening regional maritime cooperation
  • Enhancing interoperability with global partners

Focus on sovereignty and international cooperation

Emphasising the complexity of maritime border security, Badola said effective maritime governance requires a balance between addressing emerging threats and respecting national sovereignty.

“Effective maritime security requires a delicate balance—addressing evolving threats while fully respecting national sovereignty,” he stated.

He also called for stronger international collaboration, improved coordination between maritime agencies, and the development of integrated global security frameworks to address evolving challenges in international waters.

Global platform for border security dialogue

The World Border Security Congress, established in 2012, is a leading global platform that brings together senior government officials, border security experts, and industry leaders.

The forum focuses on:

  • Emerging challenges in border and maritime security
