This first-ever approval validates India's growing chip design and fabrication capabilities, particularly for 28nm-65nm nodes vital for telecom and other sectors

New Delhi: In a landmark development for India’s semiconductor sector, a telecom system powered by domestically manufactured chips has received certification from the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC). This milestone, hailed as a "big leap for India's semiconductor story" by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, marks the first time a telecom system using ‘Made in India’ chips has cleared TEC’s stringent standards and quality tests.
TEC certification, an official approval issued by India’s Telecommunication Engineering Centre under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, confirms that the system meets rigorous quality and performance standards. This recognition is a critical step forward in India's “Make in India” initiative aimed at technological self-reliance.
While India still works towards establishing advanced semiconductor fabs, the recent achievement signals major progress in semiconductor design and fabrication capabilities. The country is beginning to position itself as a credible player in the global telecom and electronics ecosystem by focusing on mature-node manufacturing, particularly for chips in the 28nm to 65nm range. These chips are vital for sectors like automotive, telecom, and industrial electronics.
An analysis by Bastion Research emphasised India's unique positioning to fill a crucial supply chain gap by producing essential, widely used chips, as opposed to competing in the ultra-cutting-edge node race. India’s capability to deliver world-class integration services and rapidly scaling operations also distinguishes it in the semiconductor landscape.
This TEC certification is expected to bolster India’s efforts to reduce import dependency and enhance its stature as a growing semiconductor hub.
