New Delhi: European Commission (EU) President Ursula von der Leyen has underscored India’s vital role in bringing an end to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine—a call she reiterated during a recent telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Council President Antonio Costa.

In a post on her official X (formerly Twitter) handle, von der Leyen stated how the war poses a risk to the entire world since it undermines economic stability and has global security consequences. “We warmly welcome India’s continued engagement with President Zelenskyy. India has an important role to play in bringing Russia to end its war of aggression and helping create a path towards peace,” she said.

The phone call also focused on the proposed India‑EU free trade agreement. Prime Minister Modi, von der Leyen, and Costa reaffirmed their commitment to conclude the deal swiftly, praising improvements in bilateral cooperation across trade, technology, investment, innovation, sustainability, defence, security, and supply chain resilience

They further discussed the next India‑EU summit to be held in India and Modi extended formal invitations to both European leaders

The joint statement highlighted their shared interest in global affairs, particularly efforts aiming to end the conflict in Ukraine. Modi restated India’s consistent support for a peaceful resolution and the prompt restoration of peace and stability in the region
