Mumbai: In a controversial move, IIT Bombay has imposed a fine of Rs 1.2 lakh each on a group of students for allegedly performing a play loosely based on the Ramayana in a derogatory manner.

In a complaint filed by a group of students, it was alleged that some character from the Hindu epic 'Ramayana' was depicted in a derogatory manner. Meanwhile, a video of the play surfaced online, drawing widespread criticism and outrage from various quarters.

The authorities swiftly took action by imposing a hefty fine on the students responsible for organizing and participating in the controversial play. The fine was levied from eight students as a disciplinary measure.

The Performing Arts Festival (PAF) is an annual event held at the institute. The play took place in March this year. However, the incident caused a public uproar after a video of the play went viral on social media. Meanwhile, the students argued that the play was well-received by everyone at the time.

"The play that was presented mocked Lord Ram and portrayed the Ramayana in a vulgar and derogatory manner," said a Masters student at the institute.

The student, who declined to be named, is one of those who lodged a complaint against the play with the administration. Another student affiliated to the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) at the IIT Bombay also confirmed that students were fined for presenting the play. The APPSC is a left-leaning student's body.
