‘Many customers cancel after seeing my disability’: Hyderabad Rapido rider shares his struggle

Hyderabad, Telangana: Sandeep, a specially abled Rapido rider from Begum Bazaar in Hyderabad, has spoken about the challenges he faces as a gig worker, saying customers often cancel rides after seeing his disability.

Sandeep, who has lived in Hyderabad all his life, said he has been working as a Rapido rider since the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I try to earn Rs 1,000 every day, but I am usually unable to reach my target because many customers cancel the ride after seeing my disability," he said.

He said he aims to complete between 50 and 60 rides a day but usually manages only 10 to 15, with the number sometimes falling to as low as five.

"People ask me why I ride for Rapido. It is because I have to earn a living and make my daily bread," Sandeep said.

Recalling his interactions with passengers, Sandeep said he faces ride cancellations almost every day.

"Every day, four to five people cancel my ride, but I can't do anything about it. Many customers hesitate, but I assure them of their safety," he said.

He alleged that some customers cancel their rides after seeing his vehicle, while others avoid cancelling because they may have to pay a cancellation fee.

"Some don't cancel because they might get charged a cancellation fee, forcing me to cancel instead. This costs me a Rs 10 penalty for each cancellation," he said.

Sandeep said he has also applied for other jobs but has not received any response so far.

Despite the difficulties, he continues to work as a Rapido rider to support himself and earn a livelihood.
