New Delhi: The city witnessed major disruption on Tuesday evening as heavy rainfall led to the diversion of at least 15 flights from the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

According to officials, eight flights were diverted to Jaipur, five to Lucknow, and two to Chandigarh due to poor weather conditions.

Rainfall, which began intermittently in the morning, intensified later in the day after a brief lull, with dark clouds enveloping the sky and triggering a heavy downpour.

The sudden spell of rain caused severe traffic congestion and waterlogging in several parts of the city, adding to commuters' woes.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Airport authorities had issued a weather advisory, warning that flight operations could be affected.

“Due to adverse weather conditions in Delhi, flight operations at Delhi Airport may be impacted. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience,” the airport said in a statement.

Passengers were urged to check directly with their respective airlines for real-time updates and were advised to use the Delhi Metro to reach the airport, as road travel could be delayed.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued yellow and orange alerts for the region, forecasting moderate rainfall along with light thunderstorms and lightning throughout the day.
