Mumbai, The Mumbai Police have enforced a prohibitory order restricting the movement and unlawful assembly of five or more persons across Greater Mumbai. The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Akbar Pathan on behalf of the Mumbai Police Commissioner, is effective from 12:01 a.m. on March 14 until midnight on March 28.
Preventing unrest and ensuring public safety
According to the order, authorities fear a possible breach of peace, public disturbance, and threats to human life and property. “Whereas, based on the information received from various sources, it is apprehended that there is likelihood of breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquility and also there is grave danger to human lives and loss of properties,” the order states. Officials believe that imposing restrictions will help prevent riots, affrays, or any form of disorder in areas under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Commissioner of Police.
What is prohibited?
As per the directive, any procession involving groups of people has been strictly banned during the specified period. Additionally, the use of loudspeakers, musical bands, amplifiers, or bursting of firecrackers in public assemblies is not permitted.
Who is exempted?
Despite the restrictions, certain gatherings and activities are allowed. The prohibitory order does not apply to marriage ceremonies and related functions. Funeral processions on the way to cremation or burial sites are also exempt. The order does not restrict meetings of statutory bodies, such as companies, co-operative societies, and clubs conducting their regular business. Additionally, social gatherings and events held in cinema halls, theatres, or entertainment venues are permitted. Assemblies in government offices, schools, colleges, courts, factories, shops, and business establishments can also continue for routine work without any restrictions.
