New Delhi: The Centre has reappointed Mahindra Group chairman Anand Gopal Mahindra as a part-time, non-official director on the Reserve Bank of India’s Central Board and appointed former ISRO chairman S. Somanath to the board for a four-year term.

Somanath was appointed to the RBI Central Board on Thursday, with his term taking effect from August 20, 2026. The former Indian Space Research Organisation chief retired from ISRO in January 2025.

According to an official statement, Somanath has been appointed as a part-time, non-official director for four years, effective August 20, 2026.

The government has also reappointed Anand Mahindra as a part-time, non-official director on the RBI Central Board for four years from August 20, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Who sits on RBI’s Central Board?

The RBI Central Board comprises the governor, four deputy governors, 10 directors drawn from various fields, two government officials and four directors representing the central bank’s four local boards.

The local boards advise the Central Board on matters specific to their respective regions and represent the territorial and economic interests of local cooperative and indigenous banks.

The Central Board oversees the functioning of the RBI and takes up key matters relating to the central bank’s operations, including monetary policy, currency management and banking regulation.
