New Delhi: India’s skies are getting a major upgrade. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Saturday successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) off the coast of Odisha, a powerful new shield designed to protect the country from modern aerial threats.

With threats from drones, missiles, and fast fighter jets becoming more complex and dangerous, India requires a multi-layered defence system that can react quickly and neutralise dangers before they reach critical targets. The IADWS was developed to fill this crucial gap in the country’s defence.

Unlike traditional air defence setups, IADWS combines several indigenous technologies into one package: quick reaction surface-to-air missiles, very short-range air defence missiles, and cutting-edge laser-based Directed Energy Weapons (DEW). This blend offers rapid, flexible, and highly effective protection across various threat ranges.
