In a major relief for highway users, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to discontinue the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for new FASTag issuances for cars, jeeps, and vans starting February 1, 2026.

The move aims to improve public convenience and put an end to post-activation issues and repeated follow-ups faced by vehicle owners, even after submitting valid documents.

Big relief for FASTag users

According to NHAI, lakhs of private vehicle owners were experiencing delays and harassment after FASTag activation due to KYV-related requirements. The authority said the reform will significantly reduce inconvenience for common road users and streamline the toll payment process.

Importantly, existing FASTags issued to cars will no longer require KYV as a routine condition.

When will KYV still be required?

NHAI clarified that KYV will now be conducted only in specific cases, such as:

  • Complaints related to loose or damaged FASTags
  • Incorrect FASTag issuance
  • Suspected misuse or duplication

In the absence of any complaint, no KYV verification will be required for existing car FASTags.

Stricter checks before FASTag activation

While removing post-issuance KYV, NHAI has simultaneously tightened pre-activation validation rules. Issuer banks will now be required to conduct mandatory VAHAN-based vehicle verification before activating a FASTag.

This measure is intended to prevent errors at the issuance stage and ensure greater accuracy and accountability.

The revised FASTag rules are expected to make toll payments smoother, faster, and hassle-free, benefiting car owners across India.
