Guwahati: A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Assam on Sunday, with tremors felt across several parts of the state.

According to reports, the quake was recorded at 4:41 pm, with its epicentre 16 km from Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district. The depth of the quake was 5 km.

No immediate loss of life or damage to property has been reported so far, officials in Assam said, as reported by PTI. The earthquake, measured at 5.8 magnitude, shook parts of the northeast.

Responding to the development, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted, "Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers for everyone's safety and well-being. Urge all to stay alert!"

According to local media reports, tremors were also felt across several northeastern states, including Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura.
