Visakhapatanam: Residents in several parts of Visakhapatnam woke up to mild tremors after a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal early on Sunday morning. The earthquake occurred at 5:05:46 a.m. IST, with its epicentre located around 225 kilometres off the Kakinada coast, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, making it a shallow seismic event. Tremors were reported from several localities in Visakhapatnam, including Gajuwaka, Mangalapalem, Sagar Nagar, Pedda Waltair, Arilova, MVP Colony and Appughar.

Apart from Visakhapatnam city, residents in Anakapalli, Vizianagaram, Kakinada and Konaseema districts also reported feeling the tremors.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) confirmed that the earthquake measured 4.5 on the Richter scale and originated in the Bay of Bengal.

Authorities said no casualties, injuries or property damage have been reported. Officials also confirmed that there was no tsunami threat associated with the earthquake.

Seismology experts described the event as a shallow earthquake, explaining that such tremors are often caused by structural adjustments beneath the Earth's surface. They emphasised that the Andhra Pradesh coast is generally considered tectonically stable, and there is currently no cause for public concern.

The latest tremor comes months after a mild earthquake affected parts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh. In November 2025, a 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck G. Madugula in Alluri Sitharama Raju district at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremor caused panic among residents, who rushed outdoors after hearing a loud sound, but no casualties or damage were reported then either.

Sunday's earthquake once again highlighted that low-to-moderate seismic activity can occasionally be felt along India's eastern coastline, although such events rarely cause significant damage in the region.
