New Delhi: India Gate will switch off its lights for one hour on Saturday night as part of Earth Hour 2026, a worldwide initiative aimed at raising awareness about climate change and sustainability.

The iconic monument will remain dark from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. IST, joining millions across the globe in the symbolic “lights-off” movement.

Earth Hour marks 20 years of global climate action

Organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney as a small environmental campaign and has since evolved into one of the largest grassroots movements in the world.

Now observed in over 190 countries and territories, the initiative encourages individuals, communities, and institutions to turn off non-essential lights for one hour.

This year’s theme, “Give an Hour for Earth,” highlights the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

Authorities in several Indian cities have called on residents to actively participate in Earth Hour by switching off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances.

In Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has urged citizens to take part in the initiative. GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan emphasized that even small steps can create a meaningful impact.

“Every small action counts. By dedicating just one hour to the planet, we can inspire meaningful change and contribute towards a sustainable future,” he said.

Along with India Gate, several prominent landmarks and public spaces across India and the world are expected to participate in the campaign.

In previous years, structures such as Rashtrapati Bhavan and other major monuments have taken part in similar lights-out observances, reinforcing the message of environmental responsibility.

Environmental experts note that Earth Hour is not only about saving electricity for an hour but also about encouraging long-term behavioural change. The initiative serves as a reminder of the urgent need to reduce energy consumption, protect natural resources, and tackle climate change.
