New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is set to embark on a three-nation tour to Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago starting May 2. The visit will continue till May 10, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The MEA said the visit highlights India’s long-standing historical and cultural connections with the three countries, particularly through the Girmitiya community of Indian origin. The engagement aims to further deepen people-to-people ties and strengthen diplomatic relations.

During the visit, Jaishankar will meet the leadership of all three countries and hold talks with his counterparts. Discussions will cover the full range of bilateral relations, along with regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Boost to South-South cooperation

The ministry stated that the visit is intended to sustain momentum in India’s political engagement with these nations and reinforce cooperation in development, trade, and strategic areas under the broader framework of South-South cooperation.

Apart from official meetings, the External Affairs Minister is also expected to interact with business leaders and members of the Indian diaspora in the three countries, reflecting India’s focus on diaspora outreach.

India has been steadily strengthening its engagement with Caribbean nations. In recent years, high-level exchanges and initiatives such as enhanced diaspora outreach and naming of “Jamaica Marg” in New Delhi have reflected closer diplomatic relations.

In 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi during the India-CARICOM Summit in Guyana, reviewing bilateral ties. In another outreach, OCI eligibility for the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago was extended up to the sixth generation during Modi’s 2025 visit.
