Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival and is considered one of the most auspicious days in Hindu tradition.

The word Dhanteras is derived from two Sanskrit words — ‘Dhan’ meaning wealth and prosperity, and ‘Teras’ meaning the thirteenth day of the lunar month.

On this sacred day, devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Dhanvantari, Lord Kubera, and Lord Yama to seek blessings for health, wealth, and spiritual well-being.

Purchasing gold, silver, utensils, vehicles, or other valuables is considered extremely auspicious, as it is believed that wealth acquired on this day multiplies thirteenfold.

Significance And Rituals

Dhanteras celebrates prosperity, longevity, and well-being. Devotees light diyas (lamps) at the entrance of their homes in the evening to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Many also purchase gold, silver, or brass utensils as symbols of good fortune.

Worshippers recite Lakshmi and Dhanvantari mantras, offer flowers, sweets, and incense, and seek blessings for health and wealth. Lighting lamps in the name of Lord Yama is believed to protect family members from untimely death.

Dhanteras thus marks the spiritual and material beginning of Diwali, ushering in light, luck, and prosperity.
