New Delhi: The Delhi government has rolled out a key change in how LPG cylinders are sold and delivered, and it directly affects how residents access cooking gas.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that buying LPG cylinders directly from godowns is now completely banned. The move is aimed at making the system more transparent and stopping illegal sales.

Officials say Oil Marketing Companies have clearly instructed distributors that any such direct sale is illegal and will lead to strict action.

So, how do you get your cylinder now?

Nothing changes for most households. If you’ve booked a cylinder, it will continue to be delivered straight to your home within the usual time.

In fact, the system is working faster than before. On April 4 alone, over 1.14 lakh bookings were made, while more than 1.31 lakh cylinders were delivered, showing that even pending orders are being cleared quickly. The average delivery time is now just over 4 days.

Easier option for quick access

If you need a smaller cylinder, there’s some good news.

5-kg LPG cylinders are now widely available across the city. You can walk into a gas agency, show a valid ID, and buy one instantly, no address proof needed. This is especially helpful for migrant workers and those who may not have full documentation.

To make things even easier, help desks have been set up at select outlets of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited to guide people to the nearest distributors.

Crackdown on black marketing

The government is also tightening enforcement to stop hoarding and black marketing.

A dedicated control room has been set up for complaints (helpline: 011-23379836 / 8383824659), and Delhi Police has already conducted raids at multiple locations. Inspections at dozens of gas agencies and storage points are also underway.

Reassuring residents, the Chief Minister said LPG supply in Delhi is fully stable and under control urging people not to panic or believe rumours.
