A senior Finance Ministry official was killed in a Delhi BMW crash near Dhaula Kuan. Police have filed serious charges, including culpable homicide and evidence tampering. Here are 10 key points we know so far about the case.

New Delhi: A day after a Finance Ministry Deputy Secretary was killed when a BMW rammed into his motorcycle near Dhaula Kuan in Delhi Cantonment, police have registered a case of culpable homicide and evidence tampering against the driver.
The accident, which also left the officer’s wife injured, has sparked questions over the handling of the aftermath and possible attempts to shield the accused. Here are the latest developments in 10 points:
- The Victim: Navjot Singh (52), Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, died in the accident on Sunday afternoon. His wife, Sandeep Kaur, suffered serious injuries.
- The BMW Driver: The car was allegedly driven by Gaganpreet, who was accompanied by her husband, Parikshit Makkar, and their two children.
- FIR Filed: Delhi Police lodged FIR No. 240/25 atthe Cantonment police station on Monday.
- Charges Invoked: The FIR cites Sections 281, 125B, 105 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), covering rash driving, endangering life, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing disappearance of evidence.
- Hospital Controversy: Instead of nearby trauma centres or AIIMS, the accused took the injured couple to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, 17 km away, reportedly known to them.
- Family’s Allegations: Singh’s son alleged his father could have survived had he been taken to a nearby hospital, questioning the decision to drive almost 20 km.
- Evidence Tampering Probe: Police suspect the choice of hospital and delay in reporting may have been an attempt to manipulate the situation or protect the accused.
- Forensic Examination: The BMW and the motorcycle were seized; a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team inspected the vehicles and crash site.
- Accused Hospitalised: Gaganpreet and her husband also sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at the same hospital. Their statements are yet to be recorded.
- Investigation Status: Police say the probe is underway. The serious charges, including culpable homicide, indicate the case is not being treated as a routine road accident.
