Violence erupted in Cuttack during protests over a denied bike rally, leading to stone pelting, arson, and heavy police action

Odisha: Communal tensions flared in Cuttack on Sunday after police denied permission for a bike rally, citing potential unrest following a Durga idol immersion procession on Friday night.
Some participants attempted to proceed despite the ban, leading to stone pelting, arson, and injuries to at least 25 people, including eight police personnel.
Curfew and internet suspension imposed
Authorities imposed a 36-hour curfew and suspended internet services for 24 hours to prevent further violence. Additional police and central armed forces were deployed to restore order, while fire services extinguished multiple spot fires set during the clashes.
Allegations of negligence and political response
Relatives of residents alleged lapses in safety measures and delayed response by authorities. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and opposition leaders, including Naveen Patnaik, urged citizens to maintain peace and assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible.
Police are monitoring the situation closely, conducting flag marches, and engaging with community leaders. Social media restrictions remain in key areas until Monday evening to curb misinformation and restore calm.
