A recent social media post has sparked widespread curiosity and debate over ambiguous airline charges after a user on X, Shrayansh Singh, questioned the mysterious “Cute Fee” listed on their flight bill. The post, directed at IndiGo, has drawn considerable attention and prompted a response from the airline.

The X user shared a screenshot of his flight invoice, highlighting several unusual charges including the 'Cute Fee', 'User Development Fee', and 'Seat Fee'. His message read: "Dear @IndiGo6E, 1. What is this 'Cute Fee'? Do you charge users for being cute? Or do you charge because you believe that your aeroplanes are cute? 2. What is this 'User Development Fee'? How do you ‘develop’ me when I travel in your aeroplane? 3. What is this 'Aviation Security Fee'? Am I not paying taxes to the Government for ensuring my safety when I travel? Or has @MoCA_GoI outsourced aviation security to businesses?"

In response to the post, IndiGo clarified that the "Cute Fee" actually refers to the Common User Terminal Equipment (CUTE) charge. "It is essentially the amount charged for the use of metal-detecting machines, escalators, and other equipment at the airport."

Despite this explanation, the user remained sceptical, questioning why these fees are added separately when there is also an Aviation Security Fee. He argued, "Isn't this part of airport security? Aren't the metal detectors the property of the CISF, which is a security organisation of the government for the security of airports too? The equipment used at the airport, including the airport buildings themselves, are public utility infrastructure. They are supposed to be maintained by the tax paid by us."

Mocking the "Cute Fee," a user wrote, "Now I understand why IndiGo was showing 3X the price to me—apparently, even being cute is an offence!"

Another X user, criticising the multiple additions to the airfare, resonated with many. One user commented, "Also, after booking a ticket we have to pay Rs. 400 for the seat. Truly unjust. As if travelling standing in a flight is an option."

Additionally, the airline explained that the "User Development Fee" is charged for the development and maintenance of airport infrastructure, while the "Aviation Security Fee" is collected by IndiGo in relation to each booking, on behalf of airport operators in India.
