New variant suspected

According to officials from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), the rise in cases may be linked to a new Omicron sub-lineage. The sub-variants are reportedly not expected to cause severe illness but are being closely monitored.

The latest surge in India follows similar trends observed across Southeast Asia, including countries such as Singapore, China, Thailand, and Hong Kong, where new Covid variants have led to a renewed wave of infections.

The government continues to urge states to remain vigilant, monitor clusters, and ensure genomic sequencing of new cases to track emerging variants effectively.
