A large-scale civil defence mock drill will be held on Thursday in four border states

New Delhi: A civil defence mock drill is scheduled to be held on Thursday in four Indian states bordering Pakistan—Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. The exercise is part of enhanced preparedness measures in the wake of heightened tensions along the border.
The timing of the drill is notable, coming just weeks after India launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 7–8. That operation was reportedly a retaliatory strike against Pakistani targets following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, in which 26 Indian tourists were killed.
Officials said the drill is intended to test emergency response coordination, civilian evacuation protocols, and inter-agency communication in case of cross-border hostilities or terrorist incidents. It will involve local civil defence teams, police, disaster management units, and medical responders.
While no official link has been declared between Operation Sindoor and Thursday’s drill, defence analysts view the exercise as part of a broader posture of alertness and strategic signalling to both domestic and foreign observers.
The Centre is reportedly weighing additional steps in border security and civil preparedness across five states adjacent to Pakistan. This mock drill is seen as part of those evolving measures.
