Chennai: Chennai is experiencing heavy rain, with an average of 6.9 cm recorded over the last 24 hours. This rainfall was measured from 8:30 am on Monday to 8:00 am on Tuesday. The Regional Meteorological Centre reported that Ennore in North Chennai saw the highest rainfall at 10 cm, followed by Manali and Kolathur, which received 9 cm each.

The Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) of the Greater Chennai Corporation noted that Ayyapakkam recorded 3.3 cm of rain in just one hour, while Mugavilakkam in Alandur saw 3.09 cm during the same period.

The heavy rains have caused waterlogging in several areas, including Kolathur, Vyasarpadi, Pulianthope, and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). The Greater Chennai Corporation has mobilised staff to pump out stagnant water using motor pumps.

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin stated that the government is prepared to manage monsoon-related issues and is working to prevent the problems seen in previous years. He emphasised that the situation is being closely monitored by staff at the ICCC.

In the early morning, Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected areas around Narayanapuram Lake, with Minister for HR&CE P.K. Sekar Babu and Chennai Corporation Mayor R. Priya joining him. They also checked the canal on Ambedkar Road, which helps redirect excess water from Kilkattalai Lake to Narayanapuram Lake, and spoke with residents about their concerns.

Weather experts predict that the area between Mahabalipuram and Nellore may experience the heaviest rainfall, with very heavy showers expected. Rain in Chennai is likely to continue until the morning of October 18, with the most intense rainfall anticipated on October 16.

Additionally, the ICCC reported a significant tree fell in Ward 141 of T. Nagar. It was promptly removed by employees from the Greater Chennai Corporation and Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue. Perambur in the Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar zone has also seen substantial rainfall, with around 9 cm recorded.
