Chennai: Building on the overwhelming success of its Chennai One mobility app, the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) is preparing to roll out monthly digital bus passes priced between ₹1,000 and ₹2,000, starting mid-November.

According to Special Officer Jayakumar, development work is in its final stages, with a tentative launch date of November 10, pending final approvals.

The initiative is part of CUMTA’s broader effort to streamline ticketing and unify payments across all public transport systems in the city.

In a major step towards a seamless commuter experience, CUMTA is also developing a virtual payment wallet, modelled on the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC).

Slated for launch in December, the wallet aims to consolidate payments across buses, suburban trains, and other transit modes—reducing dependence on cash and simplifying fare collection.

The Chennai One app has seen a remarkable public response, with over 4.6 lakh downloads in its first month, 3.7 lakh tickets booked, and repeat usage crossing 74%. Average daily bookings stand at 22,000, generating a total revenue of ₹73 lakh so far.

CUMTA is now in talks with the Railways to extend Chennai One’s ticketing services to air-conditioned suburban trains, expanding its reach beyond the current ordinary suburban network.

Upcoming updates to the app include a revamped vehicle-tracking interface, more accurate arrival predictions, and refined payout systems for its digital partners.

To promote digital adoption within the workforce, the authority is planning leaderboards and awards for top-performing conductors and depot managers.

A new “Chennai One Zone” will also be set up at major depots to provide customer assistance, digital pass sales, and help desks.

CUMTA is simultaneously strengthening commuter outreach through WhatsApp-based communication and direct engagement with existing pass holders, encouraging a smooth transition away from paper-based ticketing systems.
