Allegations of bullying and inappropriate behaviour spark internal review at broadcaster

Naga Munchetty, a high-profile presenter of Indian origin whose mother hails from Tamil Nadu, is under growing scrutiny at the BBC as reports emerge of multiple workplace complaints against her. British media outlets The Sun and The Telegraph have reported that the broadcaster has placed her “under review”, which may soon escalate into a formal investigation.
What are the complaints about?
According to The Sun, several colleagues from Munchetty’s BBC Breakfast team and Radio 5 Live show have approached the management with complaints about her “hard” and “bullying” behaviour. One claim even includes an off-air remark involving sexual language, allegedly made at the Radio 5 studio. Although no formal inquiry has yet been launched, the BBC is reviewing the seriousness of these concerns to determine whether a full investigation is needed.
This development follows internal tensions after the return of BBC Breakfast editor Richard Frediani, who had faced a separate probe over allegations of shaking a female employee. Human Resources has since launched a wider “listening review” to encourage staff to share concerns about Munchetty, Frediani, and co-host Charlie Stayt.
Why now?
The BBC’s response is unfolding in the wake of an independent workplace culture review published earlier this year. The review warned against a “culture of untouchables” where top talent or senior figures reportedly behaved inappropriately without consequence. BBC Chairman Samir Shah had stressed there was “no place” for individuals who abuse power, which has now increased pressure on management to address new allegations seriously.
Who is Naga Munchetty?
Naga Munchetty has been a BBC Breakfast presenter since 2014, appearing on-air from Thursday to Saturday, and also hosts a Radio 5 Live programme three times a week. Known for her tough interviewing style and sharp commentary, Munchetty has a strong following but has also drawn criticism in the past — including after a tense exchange with Geri Horner in 2023, which led to an apology from BBC bosses.
The situation is still evolving, and with growing media coverage and internal divisions, a formal investigation may be just weeks away.
