Barabani: A 35-year-old state police constable died after suddenly falling ill while on duty during a BJP campaign roadshow led by actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty in Barabani, West Burdwan, on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Vijay Singh, a resident of Puncha in Purulia district.

His body was sent for post-mortem, which was conducted at Asansol District Hospital on Sunday afternoon. The incident has left the police fraternity mourning.

According to police sources, elaborate security arrangements were made along the Domohani–Kelejora stretch for the roadshow.

Vijay Singh, posted at the Gourandi camp under Barabani police station, was on duty at Kelejora Chhoto More when he suddenly fell ill around 3 pm.

Eyewitnesses said he began sweating profusely and complained of severe chest pain before collapsing.

He was immediately rushed to the Kelejora Block Primary Health Centre, where doctors advised oxygen support. However, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he lost consciousness. He was declared dead shortly after.

The attending doctor later informed the Officer-in-Charge of Barabani police station in writing, and the constable’s family was notified.

Preliminary information suggests that Vijay Singh had a history of cardiac issues and had reportedly fallen ill last year as well. However, the sudden turn of events has shocked colleagues and locals alike.

Further investigation is underway.
