A new chapter in Andhra Pradesh's aviation story began on Monday as commercial flight operations officially commenced at Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Bhogapuram. The airport welcomed its first scheduled passenger flight, an IndiGo service from Hyderabad signalling the start of operations at what is expected to become one of India's most important new aviation gateways.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu flagged off the inaugural commercial services and handed boarding passes to passengers, marking the formal launch of scheduled operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the airport earlier this month on August 1.

The airport now takes over the role of handling scheduled commercial passenger traffic for the Visakhapatnam region, while the existing Visakhapatnam Airport transitions to general aviation operations.

A new gateway for north Andhra

The launch of commercial operations is being viewed as more than the opening of another airport. It represents a major infrastructure shift aimed at accelerating economic growth across North Andhra, a region that has long sought stronger connectivity with the rest of India and international destinations.

Speaking during the launch, Naidu described the airport as the beginning of a new era for the region, saying it would create fresh opportunities for investment, tourism, employment and business activity.

The first IndiGo flight arrived from Hyderabad, followed shortly by an Air India Express service from Bengaluru, giving the airport an immediate start with connections to two important domestic markets.

The new airport has been built with long-term growth in mind. Unlike the older Visakhapatnam Airport, which operates within the constraints of a naval airfield, Bhogapuram has been developed as a dedicated greenfield international airport with significant room for expansion. Its location is expected to improve access not only for Visakhapatnam but also for districts across North Andhra, including Vizianagaram and Srikakulam.

A modern terminal, larger operational capacity and future expansion plans position the airport to support rising passenger demand as the region's economy continues to grow.

Andra’s largest aviation project

Naidu said the airport had been designed to reflect the history, heritage and cultural identity of the region rather than serving only as a transport facility.

He also acknowledged the contribution of farmers who parted with their land for the project, as well as infrastructure developer GMR for executing one of Andhra Pradesh's largest aviation projects.

The airport's development is expected to strengthen sectors beyond aviation, particularly hospitality, logistics, real estate and tourism.

The end of an era for Visakhapatnam airport

While Bhogapuram begins operations, Visakhapatnam Airport has entered a different phase of its journey. Scheduled commercial operations officially ended on August 16 after IndiGo flight 6E 2018 departed for Delhi at 10:45 pm, bringing decades of regular passenger services to a close.

For many residents, the transition carries emotional significance. The airport has served the city for years and played a central role in connecting Visakhapatnam with major Indian cities.

However, the government says the existing airport will continue operating for general aviation, private aircraft and other specialised aviation activities rather than becoming completely inactive.

Building the roads before traffic

One of the biggest challenges facing any new airport is connectivity, and the government says considerable work is already underway to address that.

Several road-widening projects have been launched to improve access between Visakhapatnam and Bhogapuram. Among them is the Sontyam road connection from the Simhachalam side, while the proposed Beach Corridor is expected to provide an additional coastal route linking the city with the airport.

These projects are expected to reduce travel time and improve passenger convenience as traffic volumes increase.

Naidu acknowledged that passengers may face some initial inconvenience during the transition but expressed confidence that improved infrastructure would gradually make the airport the preferred gateway for the region.

Integrated aviation ecosystem

Bhogapuram's importance extends beyond passenger flights.

The airport forms part of Andhra Pradesh's broader strategy to build an integrated aviation ecosystem that combines passenger services, cargo operations, logistics and aircraft maintenance infrastructure. The surrounding region has already attracted interest for aerospace-related investments, and improved air connectivity could further strengthen that momentum.

The airport's ability to accommodate future international routes could also help position Visakhapatnam as a stronger gateway for business travel, exports and tourism along India's eastern coast.

What’s next

The launch of commercial services marks only the first step in what is expected to be a much larger transformation. As airlines gradually expand their schedules and supporting road infrastructure becomes operational, Bhogapuram is expected to become the primary aviation hub for North Andhra.

For a region that has long relied on infrastructure built under operational constraints, the new airport represents an opportunity to plan for future growth rather than simply meet current demand, a shift that could reshape both regional connectivity and economic development in the years ahead.
