Bengaluru: Bengaluru transport authorities have imposed a hefty fine on a student from Kerala after he took a modified car onto public roads for a joyride, officials said.

The student was penalised ₹1.11 lakh by the Yelahanka Regional Transport Office (RTO) for illegally altering his vehicle’s exhaust system to emit flames — a dangerous stunt prohibited under motor vehicle laws.

After purchasing a 2002 Honda City car for ₹70,000, the student from Kannur arrived in Bengaluru to party during the New Year and started posting videos of the fire-spitting, graffiti-laden vehicle on social media, drawing complaints for the noise and safety hazards, as per a Times of India report.

Bengaluru Traffic Police highlighted the action in a post on social media on January 15, warning motorists against such behaviour. “Fire from the exhaust? Expect the cost. Public roads aren’t stunt posts,” the police wrote.

In a translated message, the department added, “Public roads are not the place to perform stunts. It is illegal to modify your vehicle’s exhaust to create sparks or fire. Remember, you will have to pay a price for your stunts.”

Alongside the warning, the traffic police released a video showing flames shooting out of the car’s exhaust. The footage also includes an official letter from the Bengaluru RTO addressed to the police, followed by a receipt confirming payment of a ₹111,500 fine.

The video concludes with a police officer standing next to the modified vehicle, underscoring the authorities’ crackdown on illegal vehicle modifications and unsafe driving practices.

The car was released after the student paid the hefty fine. He had reportedly been driving the same car in Kerala for more than a year.
