Kolkata: A low-pressure area over the north and west-central Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify on Friday, bringing widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across West Bengal over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

After widespread showers on Rath Yatra, including a spell of heavy rain in Kolkata, the IMD has said the wet weather is likely to continue till July 19.

The weather system is expected to intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area, leading to increased rainfall across both South and North Bengal.

Heavy rain alert for South Bengal

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Bankura, Jhargram and Purulia on Friday.

Gusty winds reaching 50 kmph are likely over East Midnapore, West Midnapore and South 24 Parganas, while the remaining districts of South Bengal may witness winds of up to 40 kmph.

Kolkata, along with North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Howrah, is also expected to receive thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to heavy rain during the day.

The weather office has advised residents to remain cautious and carry umbrellas while stepping outdoors.

North Bengal on alert, fishermen advised to stay ashore

The IMD said the low-pressure system is likely to move northwards around July 19 and 20, increasing rainfall over North Bengal. Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.

Authorities have cautioned that rising river water levels and landslides are possible in the hilly districts, urging tourists and residents to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas.

The IMD has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along the West Bengal coast and adjoining areas until Saturday morning, warning that the intensifying weather system could trigger rough sea conditions.
