Silchar (Assam): Police have arrested one person and detained another after a 28-year-old woman alleged that she was gang-raped by a group of 7–8 people in Assam’s Cachar district. The incident reportedly took place near the Silchar bypass area on the night of February 19.

According to officials, the victim stated in her complaint that she and her boyfriend were stopped by a group of men travelling in an SUV. She alleged that the suspects assaulted her and also extorted ₹10,000 from the couple before fleeing the scene.

Police action and case details

Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das confirmed that an investigation is in progress. Police have registered a case at Silchar Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, including provisions related to sexual assault, extortion and criminal intimidation.

The arrested accused has been identified as Nilutpol Das, a resident of Ashram Road in Silchar. He is currently in police custody. Authorities have also detained another suspect for questioning.

Police said efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused and locate the vehicle allegedly used in the crime.

Officials described the incident as serious and confirmed that a search operation has been launched to apprehend all those involved. The victim has undergone a medical examination, and the report is awaited as part of the investigation.

Authorities have assured that the case is being closely monitored at a senior level.

The incident has also triggered political reactions. Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev expressed concern over the case on social media, criticising the state government over women’s safety and calling for accountability.
