Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma continued to question the links between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's British wife, Elizabeth Colburn, and Pakistan, claiming on Saturday that the "network is now emerging as far more significant and deeply entrenched than initially thought."
Sarma shared screenshots of old posts from Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, an advisor to Pakistan’s Planning Commission and a former colleague of Colburn, which he argued highlighted a "deeply rooted" relationship between the Gogois and the Pakistani national.
Sarma had previously targeted the Jorhat MP, demanding answers about allegations of links to the ISI, as well as claims that Gogoi was allegedly involved in "leading young individuals to the Pakistan embassy for brainwashing and radicalisation." He also referenced Colburn’s refusal to take Indian citizenship for the past 12 years.
Additionally, the Chief Minister accused Gogoi of raising sensitive defence-related issues in Parliament following his marriage to Colburn, a charge dismissed by the opposition leader as a "false accusation."
In his latest allegations, Sarma shared a 2019 post from Sheikh on X, where he commented on the issue of illegal migrants from Bangladesh to India. Sarma remarked, “Elizabeth Colburn w/o Hon'ble MP worked under Ali Tauqeer Sheikh in the organisation LEAD Pakistan, which operated under the guise of climate change initiatives,” while sharing the screenshot.
Sarma suggested that a "closer examination" of Sheikh's work revealed a more substantial and strategic involvement, particularly in Assam. “The extent of this network is now emerging as far more significant and deeply entrenched than initially thought,” he said, tagging the Union Home Ministry in his post.
The Chief Minister also shared a 2020 post from Sheikh, in which the Pakistan national praised Gogoi and others for raising the Delhi riots issue in Parliament. Sarma said, “Pakistan National Ali Sheikh of Lead Pakistan, who is Elizabeth Colburn's colleague and supervisor, shared his anti-India propaganda and also tagged and cheered Hon'ble MP when he raised the Delhi Riots 2020 issue in Parliament. Yes, the relationships appear to be deeply rooted.”
Earlier this week, the BJP had accused Gogoi’s wife of having ties to Pakistan and the ISI, a charge that was dismissed by the deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha as "laughable and entertaining."
