The wife of slain security guard Chandrabose has moved the Supreme Court, seeking a direction for the Kerala Government to pay the ₹50 lakh compensation if convict Mohammed Nisham fails to do so.

New Delhi: Jamanthi, the widow of security guard Chandrabose, has approached the Supreme Court alleging that the compensation awarded by the trial court remains unpaid. The trial court had previously ordered convicted industrialist Mohammed Nisham to pay ₹50 lakh to the victim's family. Jamanthi pointed out that the trial court’s order stipulated that if Nisham failed to pay, the State Government would be liable to provide the amount.
During the proceedings, a bench, comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma, questioned whether the compensation would be affected if Nisham’s appeal against his life sentence succeeded. However, Jamanthi’s counsel, Advocate M R Abhilash, maintained that the State Government has a standing obligation to ensure the compensation is paid. The Court has agreed to hear arguments on this matter.
The demand was raised while the Court was considering an interim bail plea filed by Mohammed Nisham. The Kerala Government, represented by Senior Advocate Jayant Muthuraj and Standing Counsel Nishe Rajen Shonker, strongly opposed the bail.
The Supreme Court has directed the State and Jamanthi to file counter-affidavits regarding the bail plea and posted the main appeal against the conviction for May 8.
The shocking incident
Chandrabose, a 50-year-old security guard in Thrissur, was brutally murdered in 2015 in an incident that shocked the state. The tragedy unfolded at Sobha City, where wealthy businessman Mohammed Nisham, infuriated by a perceived delay in opening the residential township's gates, launched a violent assault. Nisham rammed his Hummer into the guard, pinning him against a wall, and continued the assault even after the victim was severely injured. Chandrabose succumbed to his injuries in hospital weeks later, leading to Nisham's conviction and a life sentence.
