Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has announced ₹5 lakh ex gratia compensation for the families of those killed in the Markapuram bus fire accident, while ₹2 lakh will be provided to the injured.

The decision was taken at a state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who also expressed deep grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the victims’ families.

At least 14 people were killed and 28 others injured when a private bus caught fire following a collision with a tipper truck in Markapuram district early Thursday morning. The accident occurred near Rayavaram between 6 am and 6.30 am, close to a stone quarry, with both vehicles engulfed in flames.

The bus, operated by Harikrishna Travels, was travelling from Jagtiyal in Telangana to Kanigiri in Nellore district, carrying more than 40 passengers. The deceased and injured include women and children. Several passengers managed to escape after the fire broke out.

The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Ongole and Markapuram, with at least three reported to be in critical condition.

According to preliminary findings shared by Superintendent of Police Harshvardhan Raju, both the bus and the tipper truck were allegedly on the wrong route. The bus is believed to have rammed into the diesel tank of the tipper, triggering the blaze.

The bus driver told police that the steering mechanism had malfunctioned, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. Authorities are investigating this claim as part of the ongoing probe.

Emergency response teams, including police and fire personnel, rushed to the spot, deploying three fire engines to douse the flames and carry out rescue operations.

Local MLA K Narayana Reddy and senior officials visited the site to oversee relief efforts, while the district Collector has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the situation with officials and directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured. He also ordered a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident.

Transport Minister Manipalli Ramprasad Reddy expressed condolences and instructed officials to prioritise treatment and support for victims.

The Andhra bus fire tragedy has once again raised concerns over road safety, vehicle maintenance, and highway accident risks in India.
