New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday stated that the new criminal justice law will lead to a decrease in crime rates and an increase in the conviction rate to 90 per cent. He emphasized the extensive work conducted by the government, mentioning that three criminal justice laws were deliberated upon for over four years.

Shah also mentioned that he is willing to meet any leader who has concerns about new criminal laws while taking a swipe at the Opposition.

"Regarding the new laws, certain opposition members have been sharing varying statements through the media. I want to clarify that extensive discussions had taken place during which 9.29 hours were spent in Lok Sabha with 34 members participating, and over 6 hours were spent in Rajya Sabha with 40 members participating. It is misleading to claim that the Bill was introduced after members were sent out (suspended); in fact, it was listed before the Business Advisory Committee. It appears that the opposition had decided to boycott the House in advance, possibly explaining their lack of participation in the discussions," he said.

Shah emphasized that the new criminal laws will help reduce crimes against women and ensure that punishment is served. "The first priority has been given to (the chapters on) crimes against women and children, which should have been addressed much earlier."

He highlighted the addition of a comprehensive chapter featuring 35 sections and 13 provisions. Under the new laws, gang rape will now carry a penalty of 20 years to life imprisonment, while rape of a minor will result in the death penalty. Shah noted the introduction of a separate crime for sexual exploitation involving deception or false promises.

The reforms include provisions for victims to record statements at home in the presence of female officers and their families, aiming to reduce their discomfort. Shah also mentioned the introduction of online FIR filing to protect women from potential embarrassment.
