Tawang: In a historic step towards women’s empowerment and adventure sports, the first-ever All-Women High Altitude Trekking Expedition in the Eastern Himalayas has officially begun. The event was flagged off by Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, General Officer Commanding, Gajraj Corps of the Indian Army.

The unique expedition unfolds amid the breathtaking scenery of Zemithang, located in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. It marks a milestone in encouraging women to take on physically demanding and inspiring outdoor challenges.

Who is taking part in the trek?

The expedition features a diverse team of trailblazing women from across India, representing the Indian Army, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), and members of the local Monpa community.

According to an official release, these determined participants are setting out on a demanding trek that climbs to altitudes above 13,000 feet, a true test of endurance, courage, and self-confidence.

How long will the trek last?

After completing a week-long acclimatisation in the higher altitudes, the all-women team is now embarking on a 96-hour expedition. Their journey will take them through some of the most untouched and remote areas of the Eastern Himalayas.

This maiden trekking mission not only celebrates the resilience and adventurous spirit of its participants but also aims to motivate more women to explore mountaineering and high-altitude trekking in the future.

What did Lt Gen Gambhir Singh say?

Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh praised the participants for their spirit and determination, highlighting how this initiative stands as a powerful symbol of strength and inspiration.

The official statement also noted that the expedition aligns with the Government’s Vibrant Villages programme, which seeks to promote community engagement and adventure tourism in the border regions of Arunachal Pradesh.

What makes this initiative special?

This pioneering expedition not only showcases women’s capability to thrive in high-altitude challenges but also strengthens the bond between national defence forces and local communities.
