New Delhi: In response to growing instability in the Middle East, Air India announced on Sunday that it is actively rerouting flights to avoid specific airspaces over the Persian Gulf. The move comes amid the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, now in its tenth day, with the United States having joined in support of Israel.

Air India confirms route changes over security concerns

An official spokesperson for Air India stated that the airline has taken precautionary steps to avoid flying over Iranian, Iraqi and Israeli airspaces due to escalating tensions in the Gulf region.

"Amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region, Air India group confirms that our flights currently do not operate over the airspaces of Iran, Iraq and Israel," the spokesperson said.

The airline further confirmed that it will progressively expand its avoidance of certain sections of Persian Gulf airspace in the coming days. This change will impact flight routes to destinations such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait.

Longer flight durations expected

Owing to the altered flight paths, Air India has warned of longer travel times for certain routes. These include services not only to the Gulf nations mentioned but also select flights operating between India and destinations in Europe and North America.

"This adjustment may lead to extended flight durations for these services, as well as for select flights to/from Europe and North America," the spokesperson added.

Air India also assured that it is in continuous consultation with external security experts and closely monitoring the evolving situation. The airline emphasised its readiness to implement further measures, if necessary, to ensure operational safety.

"The safety and security of our passengers, staff, and aircraft remain our number one priority. We will keep our passengers informed of any updates," the statement read.

India evacuates citizens, calls for peace

Meanwhile, the Indian government continues to undertake evacuation operations to bring back Indian nationals from Iran. Several flights have already been operated for this purpose, and more are expected soon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a conversation with Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, on Sunday. During the discussion, PM Modi expressed serious concern over the ongoing escalation and urged for "immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy."

The conversation between the two leaders followed U.S. military strikes on Iran, described by officials as "massive precision" attacks.

Heightened regional tensions

The conflict between Israel and Iran has seen a sharp rise in hostilities, drawing in international powers. With the US now militarily supporting Israel, the security dynamics in the Gulf region have become increasingly volatile, prompting airlines and governments alike to take urgent precautionary measures.
