Air India confirmed on Monday, 4 August, that cockroaches were found aboard its San Francisco–Mumbai flight (AI180), causing distress to two passengers. The airline described the episode as “unfortunate” and stated that the affected individuals were immediately relocated to alternative seats in the same cabin.

When and where did the incident occur?

According to reports the incident unfolded during the international leg of flight AI180, which travels from San Francisco to Mumbai with a scheduled stop in Kolkata for refuelling. It was during this flight that the presence of “a few small cockroaches” was reported.

The cabin crew promptly assisted the two concerned passengers by shifting them to nearby seats. According to the airline, the passengers remained comfortable for the rest of their journey.

During the stop in Kolkata, ground staff carried out a thorough deep cleaning of the aircraft cabin. The same aircraft later continued on its route and arrived in Mumbai as per schedule.

Air India said it routinely conducts fumigation of its aircraft but acknowledged that occasional pest entry is still possible during ground handling. A comprehensive investigation has now been launched to identify how the insects entered the cabin and to ensure such lapses do not recur.

What did Air India say in its official statement?

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to the passengers,” said an Air India spokesperson according to media reports. The airline added that despite its “regular fumigation efforts,” pests may occasionally enter the aircraft while on the ground.

Air India has assured that it will investigate the incident thoroughly and take corrective measures. The development has sparked renewed concern over hygiene and pest control protocols on long-haul international flights.
