New Delhi: Air India will operate an additional flight, AI138D, from Milan to Delhi today, 19 October, to accommodate passengers of flight AI138, which was cancelled on 17 October due to a technical issue. The flight will depart Milan at 1900 hrs (local time) and arrive in Delhi on the morning of 20 October.

The airline has extended full assistance to affected passengers, including hotel accommodation and meals. Full refunds or complimentary rescheduling have also been offered. Passengers can contact the 24x7 call centre at 011-69329333 / 011-69329999 for further assistance.

Flight AI138, carrying 255 passengers and more than 10 crew members, was grounded after engineers detected a technical fault on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (VT-ANN). The aircraft had arrived in Milan from Delhi as AI137 after a nine-hour journey bypassing Pakistani airspace. Upon arrival, a technical issue was discovered that could not be resolved in time for the return flight, forcing the airline to prioritise passenger safety.

Passengers have been rebooked on flights scheduled for 20–21 October, depending on seat availability. One traveller with a Schengen visa expiring on 20 October was accommodated on another airline departing Milan on 19 October to ensure compliance with visa regulations.

Safety and fleet concerns

Air India reiterated that passenger safety remains its top priority. The airline continues to provide meals and other ground assistance while reaffirming its commitment to passenger and crew well-being. This incident highlights ongoing challenges with Air India’s ageing wide-body fleet. The DGCA recently sought details from Boeing after another Air India Dreamliner reported an automatic deployment of its ram air turbine before landing in the UK earlier this month.

The cancellation underscores the need for rigorous safety checks on older aircraft and highlights the importance of contingency arrangements to minimise disruption for passengers on international routes.
