Ahmedabad: A devastating plane crash occurred in Gujarat, India, on June 12, 2025, when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

The cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed, and rescue operations are underway. This incident, that has shaken the nation, is a grim reminder of the aviation catastrophes in India’s past.

Air India Flight AI855 (1978)

On January 1, 1978, a Boeing 747-200 of Air India named “Emperor Ashoka” crashed into the Arabian Sea shortly after takeoff from Bombay, killing all 213 people on board. The probable cause was attributed to a failure of an attitude detector, leading to the pilot's spatial disorientation. The flight was bound for Dubai.

Air India Flight 403 (1982)

On June 21, 1982, a Boeing 707-400 crashed at Bombay's Sahar International Airport after a hard landing in heavy rain. The aircraft bounced off the runway, and the crew's attempt to perform a go-around resulted in a stall, causing the plane to fall back onto the runway and break up. Of the 111 occupants, two crew members and 15 passengers were killed, and 6 crew members and 19 passengers were seriously injured.

Indian Airlines Flight 605 (1990)

The Indian Airlines Flight 605 crash occurred on February 14, 1990, when the aircraft, an Airbus A320-231, crashed on approach to HAL Airport in Bangalore, India. The plane hit the ground short of the runway, killing 92 of the 146 people on board. 

Saudi Arabian Airlines SV763 and Kazakhstan Airlines 1907 (1996)

The Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision occurred on November 12, 1996, when a Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 747-168B and a Kazakhstan Airlines Ilyushin Il-76TD collided in mid-air over Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, India. The collision resulted in a catastrophic loss of life, with all 312 people on board both aircraft killed. 

The Alliance Air Flight 7412 (1998)

The Alliance Air Flight 7412 crash occurred on July 17, 1998, when a Dornier Do 228 aircraft crashed into a residential area near Patna Airport in Bihar, India. The plane was on a flight from Patna to Delhi when it experienced engine failure and attempted an emergency landing, but unfortunately, it crashed, killing all 55 people on board.
Air India Express Flight IX812 (2010)

On May 22, 2010, Air India Express Flight 812, a Boeing 737-800, overshot the runway at Mangalore International Airport, crashing into a gorge and killing 158 people. The aircraft was on a scheduled international flight from Dubai to Mangalore.

Air India Express Flight IX1344 (2020)

On August 7, 2020, Air India Express Flight 1344, a Boeing 737-800, crashed upon landing at Kozhikode International Airport in Kerala, killing 21 people. The investigation attributed the probable cause to pilot error, specifically the decision to land despite adverse weather conditions, and systemic failures within Air India Express. The pilots attempted to land twice, and during the second attempt, the aircraft deviated from the set navigation paths, leading to an unstabilised approach.
