In 2024, Vijay announced a significant career shift, formally launching Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and signalling his intention to gradually step away from cinema

Days after his wife Sangeetha filed for divorce at the Chengalpattu district court, actor-turned-politician Vijay has finally broken his silence on social media.
The founding president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, 2 March, to share a message for students appearing for their Class 12 public examinations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
“Heartfelt greetings to my dear younger brothers and sisters who are writing the 12th standard public exam in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” he wrote in Tamil.
Encouraging students to remain calm, he added: “You all, who are set to create a prosperous society tomorrow, face this exam without anxiety, without fear, and with courage. Advance wishes to excel in higher education as well! Only good will happen! Victory is certain!”
According to the official schedule, the TN HSE +2 examinations are being held from 2 March to 26 March.
Divorce petition details
Vijay’s post comes amid intense public scrutiny following Sangeetha’s divorce filing.
In her petition, Sangeetha, 48, stated that their marriage was first registered in the United Kingdom on 10 July 1998. A ceremonial Hindu wedding followed on 25 August 1999 at Rajah Muthiah Mandram in Egmore, Chennai.

She described the early years of their marriage as cordial and harmonious, but alleged that matters deteriorated in 2021 after she discovered Vijay’s alleged adulterous relationship with an actress. The petition claims the alleged affair caused her significant emotional distress and mental suffering, amounting to a violation of marital trust.
The next hearing in the case is reportedly scheduled for 20 April 2026.
A relationship that began in the 1990s
The couple’s relationship dates back to 1996, following the success of the film Poove Unakkaga. Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan Tamil raised in the UK, travelled to Chennai to congratulate Vijay personally. Impressed by her sincerity, Vijay introduced her to his parents, who later initiated a marriage proposal.
Between 1996 and 1999, their relationship developed, culminating in their interfaith wedding in August 1999. Vijay, a Christian, and Sangeetha, a Hindu, married in a traditional Hindu ceremony attended by close family and friends.
They welcomed their son, Jason Sanjay, on 26 August 2000, followed by their daughter, Divya Saasha, in 2005. Despite Vijay’s superstardom, Sangeetha largely stayed away from the limelight and rarely attended film or promotional events.
Her absence from high-profile occasions — including the trailer and audio launch of Varisu — had previously fuelled rumours of a rift, though these were dismissed at the time.
Political shift amid personal strain
In 2024, Vijay announced a significant career shift, formally launching Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and signalling his intention to gradually step away from cinema to focus on public service.
The party made its electoral debut in local body polls and has since worked to consolidate its base through public rallies, conferences and membership drives, particularly targeting young voters.
