New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has officially written to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat seeking the removal of Raghav Chadha as the party’s deputy leader in the House, party sources said on Thursday.
The party has proposed Punjab MP Ashok Mittal as his replacement and has asked the Secretariat to process the appointment at the earliest.
Sources said the letter also makes it clear that Chadha should not be given speaking time in the Rajya Sabha from AAP’s allotted quota.
The move comes shortly after Chadha was left out of AAP’s list of star campaigners for the upcoming Assembly elections, signalling a shift in his responsibilities within the party.
AAP has a total of 10 members in the Rajya Sabha, seven from Punjab and three from Delhi.
Chadha began his political work alongside Arvind Kejriwal during the 2012 Delhi Lokpal campaign. He later emerged as a prominent face of AAP, serving as its national spokesperson and becoming the youngest treasurer after the party’s 2015 Delhi Assembly victory.
He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from South Delhi but was defeated by Ramesh Bidhuri. He returned to electoral politics in 2020, winning the Rajendra Nagar Assembly seat, and subsequently held the position of vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board.
In 2022, Chadha was elected to the Rajya Sabha at 33, making him one of the youngest members of the Upper House. Since then, he has handled key parliamentary responsibilities and played an active role in the party organisation, working closely with leaders such as Manish Sisodia and Bhagwant Mann.
