Chennai: DMK Deputy General Secretary A. Raja and party MLA Sekarbabu have been booked over alleged derogatory remarks made during party protests in Tamil Nadu on September 12, with separate complaints targeting statements against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and a minister.

According to police, the case was registered at B1 North Beach Police Station as Crime No. 287/2026 under Sections 296, 352, 196(1), 353(1), 352(2) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

What is the case against Sekarbabu?

A DMK protest was held in front of the District Collector's office in Chennai on September 12 under Sekarbabu's leadership.

A complaint alleged that the MLA made derogatory remarks against the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and a minister during the demonstration.

The complaint was lodged by Karthik of Saidapet, Chennai.

Police said the allegations relate to offences corresponding to provisions including Sections 294, 504, 153A(1) and 505(1) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with other provisions.

The case was registered following the complaint, with the BNS provisions forming the basis of the FIR.

A. Raja booked over remarks against minister's mother

A separate police case has been registered against DMK Deputy General Secretary A. Raja over remarks he allegedly made during a DMK protest in Saidapet.

According to a complaint filed by lawyer Karthi, Raja allegedly made insulting remarks about the mother of Minister Nirmal Kumar while addressing the demonstration. Saidapet Police registered a case against him under seven sections.

The cases against Raja and Sekarbabu stem from the DMK protests held across Tamil Nadu on September 12.
