Punalur (Kerala): The police have registered a case against BJP councillor and former DGP R Sreelekha over derogatory remarks made against Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The FIR was registered by the Punalur police.

According to the FIR, Sreelekha's speech was an attempt to incite a riot amongst cadres. The charges carry a punishment of up to one year's imprisonment if a riot breaks out as a consequence of the speech, or up to six months' imprisonment for the incitement if no riot occurs. The case has been registered under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which is a bailable offence. The police action follows a complaint lodged by Punalur Block Congress president C Vijayakumar.

Sreelekha, also BJP state vice-president, made the controversial comments against Gandhi during a Jana Jagratha Sadas organised by the BJP in Punalur. In her address, she alleged that Rahul Gandhi's actions in Delhi reflected the panic and agitation experienced when drugs enter the system, characterising his political conduct as a wild outburst under the influence.

She further mocked the Opposition leader by alleging that Rahul Gandhi and ministers were littering Delhi by tossing plastic bottles everywhere. The complaint states that Sreelekha's remarks were deeply offensive to the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
