Kozhikode: According to a survey report post-Covid, 61 percent of children in the country between the age group of 9 and 18 has apparently become addicted to social media, OTT and online gaming platforms. The report also suggests that due to online addiction, these children tend to either turn violent or remain depressed most of the time. These children remain lazy for most part of the day.

In most cases, the parents are least aware of the apps that their children use. Post-pandemic, kids are largely exposed to digital platforms, increasing their access to the internet. A website named ‘Local Circle’ had recently conducted a survey among 46,000 parents living across 269 districts in the country, revealing these shocking details.

According to reports, 73 percent of the parents are of the opinion that children under the age of 18 should be granted access to social media, OTT and gaming platforms, only after receiving prior consent from their parents. They are demanding stringent rules to be put in place for restricting internet use among children.

On an average, 61 percent of the children between the age of 9-17, spend almost 3 hours everyday on various online platforms.

Most of the children spend time online watching videos. The attraction towards gadgets is having a considerable impact on the behavioural patterns of children. 39 percent of the parents stated that their children are increasingly turning violent on numerous occasions.

Children are advised not to visit/download content from pirated/fake sites. They are supposed to exercise caution while engaging in online games.

Children are strictly warned against accessing the dark net. In case of receiving fake or threatening messages, they are advised to contact the cyber cell immediately.

Meanwhile, parents are asked to keep a strict vigil on the internet usage of their children. They should adhere to all rules ensuring cybersecurity.
