The Bharatiya Janata Party is in a commanding position in at least 103 Assembly constituencies in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday, signalling a major refresh of candidates ahead of the state elections.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma indicated that around 40 new faces are likely to be fielded, even as seat-sharing talks with allies near completion.

BJP claims commanding position in 103 seats

Sarma said the BJP’s organisational strength and its performance in government have placed the party in a strong position across much of the state.

“At least in 103 Assembly seats, the position of the BJP is very strong,” he said.

The Chief Minister noted that the party currently has 63 sitting MLAs in the Assembly. Given that number, he suggested it was natural that several new candidates would be introduced this time.

“We have 63 MLAs, so it is obvious that around 40 new faces will contest the Assembly polls for the BJP,” CM Sarma said.

The remarks point to a strategy aimed at renewal within the party ranks ahead of the elections.

Seat-sharing talks near final stage

On alliance dynamics, Sarma said discussions with the Asom Gana Parishad and other regional parties, particularly in the Bodoland Territorial Region, are almost complete.

“We have almost finalised seat-sharing talks with Asom Gana Parishad and other regional parties in Bodoland,” the CM told reporters.

He added that the National Democratic Alliance in Assam remains united and focused on electoral preparedness.

“By mid-March, the final seat-sharing will be done,” he said, indicating that a formal conclusion to negotiations is expected within weeks.

NDA focuses on governance record

Sarma reiterated that the BJP-led government’s emphasis on development, welfare schemes and governance reforms has strengthened public support across regions.

He expressed confidence that the NDA would approach the polls with a clear roadmap and a strong organisational structure.

With Assembly elections drawing closer, political activity in Assam has intensified, as parties accelerate preparations and alliance negotiations gather pace.
