Kottayam: Adding one more feather to its cap, the Kottayam Medical College Hospital has successfully closed a congenital hole in the heart of a patient through a novel interventional cardiology procedure.

The interventional procedure was performed on a 42-year-old resident of Pala. Through the surgery, a Sinus Venosus ASD (atrial septal defect), a rare adult congenital heart disease that causes shunting of blood from the systemic to the pulmonary circulation,. 

Like angioplasty, the surgery was performed by inserting a stent through the clavicle. In the cath lab, the hole, which is usually closed during complex heart surgery, was closed with a stent, an innovative treatment method. 

Health Minister Veena George congratulated the entire team members of Kottayam Medical College who led the surgery.

Due to a congenital problem in the heart, the surgery was performed last Saturday under the guidance of the Paediatric Cardiology Department. Bleeding was avoided as it was a keyhole surgery. So there was no need to give blood. It does not require much rest, like other surgeries. After intensive care, the patient was discharged.

Senior consultant paediatric cardiologist Dr. Anil SR, Assistant Professor Dr. Haripriya Jayakumar, anesthesiologist Saji KM, Cath lab technicians Anu, Sandhya, and Jain, anaesthesia technician Arun, and senior nurse Susan performed the surgery.
